The vineyards of Meursault are bordered by the appellations of Volnay to the north and Chassagne-Montrachet to the south. There are 17 Premier Cru vineyards but no Grand Cru vineyards. Nearly all wines are white made from Chardonnay. The wines of Meursault are the softest, richest and most rounded compared with Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Both red and white grapes are allowed. The soils are clay/limestone.
Murassalt the village is mentioned in 1090 in the Cluny abbey Charter. Derived from the ancient French Marem Salicem “male willow,” we can assume at one time the village of Meursault was robust in willow trees.
